LRC65-01 Polestar sea trials

2024, Hindeloopen/Vlieland (NL) — LRC65-01 Polestar sea trials.

The last few weeks have been devoted to commissioning the LRC65-01 systems (navigational, steering, engine, CPP, calibrating tanks) and preparing her for sea trials.

After calibrating the Helseth CPP, several dockside tests were performed. With positive results (forward, neutral, reverse, and correct engine and gearbox oil and coolant temps), the next phase was a real-life test that included a track on tidal waters. With that goal in mind, the stabilizing gyro and the anchor winch arrangement were also commissioned.

At first, the wind was somewhat lighter, but after two hours, it came from the East at 22-26 knots. With a light payload (2300 liters of fuel and water forward), this extended sea trial (six hours, four hours on tidal waters and a lock passage) was very useful.

The engine behaved as expected, as did all systems. The forward speed needs some adjustment, but the maneuvering went well. She did roll a bit without the gyro engaged, but her movements were smooth overall. The gyro made sailing a breeze on the tidal water track with wind against current and passing ships.
